I'm sure a lot of you saw this story in the NY Times yesterday. After watching the video, I really debated about whether or not to post it to my blog. On the one hand, I think it is overtly anti-capitalist in a negative way, without recognizing the benefits the capitalist economic system has brought to countless people around the world. Additionally, it provides no realistic advice of how to stop or help solve the problems it is talking about. That makes it needlessly terrifying, rather than hopeful--and frankly the latter is what we need when confronting a problem of this magnitude. On the other hand, what is laid out has a lot of truth to it. Our way of life has been and remains manufactured. Lot's to think about here, which I did most of today.
In the end I decided to post it because it is promoting dialogue among the schoolchildren who are watching it.
From the NY Times:
Mr. Lukach’s students made a response video and posted it on YouTube, asking Ms. Leonard to scare them less and give them ideas on how to make things better. That in turn inspired high school students in Mendocino, Calif., to post an answer to Woodside, with suggested activities.
If they can use it as a springboard for debate, so can we.
It's long, but worth it.
